What Is Neural Tension?
Neural tension is a condition where a nerve is either overstretched or struggles to glide smoothly through the tissues and pathways it travels within your body. Unlike muscles and other soft tissues, nerves don’t tolerate stretching well. When a nerve is restricted or pulled beyond its comfort zone, it can become irritatedāproducing the hallmark symptoms of neural tension.
Symptoms of Neural Tension
Neural tension can show up in several ways, including:
- Numbness
- Tingling
- A sensation of pressure
- A feeling like a tight muscle running along the length of a limb
These symptoms vary depending on which nerve is involved and where along its path it’s being restricted.
What Causes Neural Tension?
To understand the causes, it helps to picture how your nervous system is built.
Your brain connects to your spinal cord, which runs through your spine. At each spinal level, nerves branch off to supply sensation, motor control, and other functions throughout your body. From your fingertips to the soles of your feet, you’re filled with nervesāwhich is why you can feel touch, move muscles, and coordinate countless functions with awareness.
Because nerves travel the entire body, pinpointing where the tension starts can be tricky. The restriction could sit anywhere along the nerve’s pathāa tight neck, a stiff joint, adhered connective tissue, a weak muscle, or even a herniated disc.
How Is Neural Tension Treated in Physical Therapy?

A common intervention is nerve glides (also called nerve flossing or nerve tensioners)āgentle exercises designed to help the nerve move more freely within its surrounding tissues.
