What is the TMJ?

TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, which is the joint that connects your lower jaw to your skull. The joint is made of the mandible (lower jaw) and the temporal bone of your skull, a disc, and several muscles. These components allow your jaw to open and close, move side to side, and move forwards and backwards. When these components are not aligned properly, are inflamed, or not synchronized problems can occur and can lead to pain.

Common Conditions associated with TMJ painĀ

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are disorders of the jaw muscles, temporomandibular joints, discs, and the nerves associated with facial pain. There is also high correlation between neck and thoracic spine pain, poor posture, and decreased mobility with an increase in jaw pain. Some common conditions associated with TMD are:

  • Myofascial pain
    • Discomfort or pain in the muscles that control the jaw, neck, and shoulder function
  • Internal derangement of the joint
    • Dislocated jaw or displaced disc (which can lead to lock jaw), damage to the disc or capsule that surrounds the joint, or damage to the bones in the joint
  • Degenerative Joint Disease
    • Osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis in the jaw joint

Signs and symptoms associated with Jaw painĀ

  • Jaw discomfort or soreness
  • Headaches
  • Pain that spreads to the face or neck
  • Limited movement or locking of the jaw
  • Painful clicking, popping, or grating in the jaw joint when opening or closing the mouth
  • Ringing in the ears, hearing loss, dizziness
  • Change in teeth alignment
