Urinary Incontinence Physical Therapy

Urinary Incontinence Physical Therapy in Chicago

Urinary incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine, often related to weakness, tension, or poor coordination in the pelvic floor muscles. Urgency and frequency are related but distinct concerns, involving a sudden strong need to urinate or needing to go far more often than feels normal.

These symptoms are common in women and men of all ages, but they are not a normal part of aging, and they do not have to limit your workouts, your sleep, or your confidence. At our River North clinic, every visit is a full hour, one on one with your physical therapist.

Bladder symptoms we commonly help with

  • Leaking urine with coughing, sneezing, laughing, running, jumping, or lifting (stress incontinence)
  • Leakage with a sudden urge, or not making it to the bathroom in time (urge incontinence)
  • A combination of both (mixed incontinence)
  • Frequent urination during the day or waking at night to urinate
  • Difficulty starting or fully emptying the bladder
  • Dribbling after urination
  • Bladder symptoms related to pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, or menopause
  • Leakage after prostate surgery
  • Leakage that limits running, lifting, or high impact exercise

When to come in

If leakage, urgency, or frequent trips to the bathroom are changing how you exercise, sleep, or plan your day, it is worth getting evaluated. Mild or long standing symptoms respond well to treatment too.

What to expect at your first visit

Through a detailed pelvic floor assessment, your physical therapist will identify which muscles need strengthening, which need to relax, and how your bladder habits may be contributing. A pelvic floor exam may be part of your evaluation, but it is always discussed with you first and done only with your consent.

From there you will get practical strategies to manage symptoms right away, such as urge control techniques, bladder retraining, and adjustments to fluid and bathroom habits, along with a plan built for long term relief.
