Sexual Health Physical Therapy
Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy for Sexual Health and Pain with Intercourse
Pain with sex is common, but it is not something you have to accept. Often it is caused by tension, tenderness, or poor coordination in the pelvic floor muscles, and it can also be related to scar tissue, hormonal changes, or a history of pelvic pain.
Pelvic floor physical therapy helps identify which muscles and tissues are involved and builds an individualized plan to reduce pain so that intimacy can feel comfortable and enjoyable again. At our River North clinic, every visit is a private, full hour, one on one with your physical therapist.
Concerns we commonly help with
- Pain with initial penetration or deeper pain during intercourse
- Burning, aching, or soreness after sex
- Pain or difficulty with tampon use or gynecological exams
- Involuntary tightening of the vaginal muscles (vaginismus)
- Vulvar pain or sensitivity (vulvodynia and vestibulodynia)
- Pain after childbirth, perineal tears, or episiotomy
- Pain related to perimenopause and menopause
- Pelvic pain associated with endometriosis or after pelvic surgery
When to come in
If sex has been painful for a while, or if pain started after a specific event like childbirth, surgery, or hormonal changes, physical therapy can help. You do not need a diagnosis to be evaluated, and it is never too late to start.
What to expect at your first visit
Your first visit begins with a private, unhurried conversation about your symptoms, history, and goals, along with an assessment of your posture, breathing, hips, and movement. A pelvic floor exam may be part of your evaluation, but it is always discussed with you first, done only with your consent, and can be paused or stopped at any time.
From there, your plan may include manual therapy, pelvic floor relaxation and mobility work, breathing techniques, strengthening, and education on tools like dilators, all at a pace that feels comfortable for you. We are also happy to coordinate care with your OB/GYN or other providers.
