Prenatal Physical Therapy

Prenatal Physical Therapy in Chicago

Your body changes in so many ways during pregnancy. Your posture shifts, your joints loosen, your abdominal wall stretches, and your pelvic floor carries more load every week. It can be hard to know what is normal, what is safe, and how to keep moving with confidence.

Prenatal physical therapy at our River North clinic helps you manage pain, stay active, and prepare your body for delivery and recovery. Every visit is a full hour, one on one with your physical therapist.

Pregnancy concerns we commonly help with

  • Low back, hip, and pelvic girdle pain, including SI joint and pubic symphysis pain
  • Diastasis recti (abdominal separation)
  • Bladder leakage, urgency, and frequency
  • Pelvic heaviness or pressure
  • Constipation and bowel changes
  • Pain or numbness that radiates into the buttock or leg
  • Upper back, neck, and rib discomfort as your body changes
  • Staying safely active with running, lifting, and your usual workouts
  • Preparing your pelvic floor, breathing, and positioning for labor and delivery

When to come in

Physical therapy can help at any point in pregnancy. Some women come in as soon as pain starts, others want a plan for staying active, and many come in during the third trimester to prepare for delivery. You do not need to wait until something hurts.

What to expect at your first visit

Your first visit includes a detailed conversation about your pregnancy, history, and goals, along with an assessment of your posture, strength, breathing, and movement. A pelvic floor exam may be part of your evaluation, but it is always discussed with you first and done only with your consent.

From there, we build a plan that fits your body, your schedule, and your stage of pregnancy. Treatment may include manual therapy, core and pelvic floor training, breathing and pushing strategies, and guidance for exercise that you can adjust as your pregnancy progresses.

Planning ahead for recovery

Many of our prenatal patients continue with us after delivery. Learn more about postpartum rehab, including C-section and perineal tear recovery, or read our blog post on how physical therapy can help postpartum.
